7 Books to Help You with Your First Dog

If you are on your way to puppy parenthood for the first time and looking for a series of books that will help guide you into becoming the best parent for your dog, than you’ve come to the right place. Having a puppy is one of life's biggest joy’s but it’s also, as your parents probably pointed out, a huge responsibility. So if you want to avoid a lot of ‘I told you so’s’, you have a bit of homework.

Preparing for a dog is like preparing for having a baby. You’re going to need a lot of books to help you understand how dogs work, what they need and how to train them. Dogs have their own personality and sometimes certain breeds have stronger characteristics than others, so it’s good to do your research. Before getting a dog you’re going to need all the information you can get your hands or ‘paws’ on. Here’s a list of 7 books to get you started in dog 101:
1. Dog Behaving Manual - Kirsty Millar
2. In a Dog’s Heart -Jennifer Arnold
3. Behavior Problems of a Dog & Cat- Gary Landsberg
4. 100 Ways to Train the Perfect Dog- Sarah Fisher
5. Unlock Your Dog’s Potential - Sarah Fisher
6. Decoding Your Dog - American College of Veterinary Behaviorists
7. Teach Your Puppy to be the Dog you Want - Clarice Rutherford & David H Neil
Keep in mind that, like babies, nothing can really prepare you for the real thing. Part of the charm of raising a puppy is getting to know them, so you really have to play it day by day. However, it doesn’t hurt to be as informed as possible, so feel free to check out more books about raising dogs and other pets at www.gellmedia.com.
