When it comes to independent reading, students get confused while choosing the reading material from the variety available. They are not able to make a choice whether they should read fiction books, nonfiction, magazines, different media, etc., for their independent consumption and delight. Back in the 1960s, Russell Stauffer wrestled with this downside. He tried to clarify by exploiting the term using “self-selected reading” to refer to the reading assignments youngsters did in class that allowed them to choose what they want to read.
Some people over at the American Association of School Libraries apparently rejected most of the independent reading views that were thrown at them. Independent reading is where the students choose to do on their own involves personal selection of material. It’s the reading nobody assigns to the students and it needs no reporting or responsibility.
In fact, the term independent reading has been used for more than 100 years, and Wikipedia appears to own its right — the term has been used in relation to schooling.
