When you can’t keep cramming, write it down

The mind can sometimes feel like that cupboard in your kitchen which you just stuff everything into, even though you know there’s not enough room and you know that everything could just come crashing out of it if you don’t close the door in time.

Just as you know that cramming everything in like that isn’t a good idea, you also know that keeping negative thoughts and turning over your problems in your head isn’t good either. But how do your address this? A good thing to do is write. No, we’re not talking about penning and epic novel here.

Make a list of everything that is on your mind and stressing you out. No matter how trivial it is, it is good to get it out there so you can start to learn what are the things the matter most. Next divide these things into those which you have control over and those which you don’t. Write each list on two separate pieces of paper.

For the things you have control over, start to brainstorm ways in which you can address them and change them. Is it something you can do on your own or do you need to ask someone for help? By asking for help, you are not suddenly burdening someone else with your problems, you are simply taking control of them. A good friend or family member will see this and want to help.

There may be some things which you have control and which are easily fixed, but because your head has been so full of many other things, you may not have realised how easy and straightforward it is to address these things.

Oh, and that list you’ve made of the things you can’t control, crumple that up and throw it in the trash.
